2008 VENICE BIENNALE

Bulgarian Pavilion: BULGARIA YOUNG ARCHITECTS

The design proposal for the first presentation of the Bulgarian Pavilion at the Venice architectural biennial, made by Georgi Stanishev has been selected and approved by the Union of Architects in Bulgaria (UAB). Vessela Nozharova was invited by Georgi Stanishev as co-curator for the Venetian Biennial show. Todor Bulev, President of the UAB has been appointed as a Commissioner of the Exposition. The proposal of Georgi Stanishev was to expose 10 best young practices in the current Bulgarian architecture, so as to trace the paths of future development of the profession and its fundamental role in society. To expose this ideology the curator’s design proposal was to fill up the storage space of the old brewery in the island of Giudecca, hired by the Ministry of Regional Development and Public Works of Bulgaria with cylindrical spaces. These spaces with dimensions of 2.5 in diameter, 1.2 in height, are hung off the ceiling at a level of 1.5 m from the floor surface and allowing a distance between then at about 0.9 m. Each hollow cylinder is accessible from below only, which demand from the spectators to lean when entering their spaces. The inner cylindrical surface is given for free expression of each one of the selected architects’ visions, allowing themselves to be sub curators of each one micro-exposition.
