POPO HOUSE

Interior project for a single-family house in Simeonovo, Sofia, 2002.

The house is located in a village in the Southern suburbs of Sofia, at the foot of the Vitosha mountain. The basic concept is to link all the different levels and functional zones of the house around a vertical atrium space, similar to a monastery court, thus giving an access to all rooms at its three floors from its perimetral gallery. The atrium is lightened by a glass prism above the building roof. An exotic element of the atrium is the staircase of a “corbusian” type, that links all the levels of the house. The atrium is organised to serve the energy efficient climatisation of the house space: in the summer the cool air from the mountain is passing through the atrium, working as a cooling device, while in the winter, due to the installed floor heating, it is converted into a heating convector and heat distributor for the space of the residence. The living and dining rooms along with the kitchen, are on the ground floor, and are opened to the garden with a pool, organised as stepping up terraces, following the rising terrain. All windows above the ground floor are provided with sliding aluminum shutters.
